Three years' contract with prospects of extension for a further three years or appointment to the permanent pensionable establishment.

General civil engineering, especially the design and construction of waterworks schemes.

Degree in Civil Engineering and/or Corporate Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

General civil engineering experience is essential, preferably in reinforced concrete design and construction, and in the use of modern construction plant. Experience in waterworks design, construction and maintenance is essential.

25 to 35 years.

Pensionable emoluments: £545 per annum for the first 2 years, then £595 to £950 by annual increments of 3 of £25, 1 of £30, 1 of £100, and 5 of £30.

An officer is required to contribute 4% of his salary to the Widows and Orphans Pension Scheme.

: (a) A non-pensionable residential allowance is payable to an

officer actually residing in the Colony at the rate of 10% of the first £400, 5% of the second £400 and 21% of the third £400 of his salary.

(b) A temporary non-pensionable High Cost of Living Allowance

is payable on a sliding scale which in July 1947 for a salary of £545 per annum was £270 per annum for married officers and £182 for single officers, and for a salary of £950 per annum was £285 per annum for married officers and £152 per annum for single officers.

: If unfurnished Government Quarters are provided the rent charged

will be twelve per cent of salary. If furnished Government quarters are provided, an additional one per cent of salary will be charged. If such quarters are not available a rent allowance may be paid of a sum equal to the rent paid by the officer for privately owned quarters or if that rent is greater than the maximum rent for the time being prescribed in the General Orders of the Hong Kong Government, a sum equal to such a maximum rent, less in either case the sun which he would pay as rent for Government quarters if he occupied such quarters. During the period of post-war rehabilitation quarters may not be available, but a room in a hotel or hostel will be available at a charge of 10% or 5% of salary respectively in the case of a married officer. For a single officer the charge is 5% or 21 respectively. The charge includes furniture but not board. It is not necessary to bring furniture from England.

Free medical attention and medicines will be provided.

First Class passage by sea will be provided in accordance with Colonial Regulation 81, or if the Government so directs air passage will be provided.
